Job Description:
  • The client seeks a LAN Systems Engineer which will report to the Manager of Local Area Networks (LAN), with the broadest scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment.   The candidate selected will be expected to serve as LAN Systems Engineer responsible for providing senior level operational support for software distribution and packaging. 
  • This includes managing workstations, Windows Servers, Terminal Server software applications, Active Directory, and Group Policy Objects as it relates the entire enterprise infrastructure.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops and supports a system to manage computers that operate on the LAN.
  • Performs senior level responsibilities which include monitoring and maintaining Windows 2003/2008 server hardware environments, planning and conducting regular system maintenance on related software applications and creating and managing log on scripts.
  • Optimizes software distribution services to make best use of available storage and bandwidth across a large Wide Area Network comprising thousands of locations.
  • Provides hardware assistance and schedules and performs maintenance on Windows (server and desktop O/S) Microsoft Office, other software applications, and on individual user devices.
  • Plans and performs regular system maintenance on Windows Terminal Services and Citrix and ensures system functionality through wireless access points and wireless network adapters, printers, scanners, broadband routers and end-user switches.
  • Conducts a periodic evaluation of disaster recovery procedures and performs related disaster recovery tasks.
  • Interacts with end-users and vendors to resolve issues with vendors’ products.  Ensures that hardware and software meet security requirements.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves network connectivity issues in the LAN, Wireless LAN or WAN.
  • Ensures a stable performance environment by identifying and resolving technical problems, and participates in various IT projects intended to improve and upgrade the DOE IT infrastructure.
  • Repackages Microsoft Installer (MSI) packages, or executables to customize client-server installations for desktop software distributions.
  • Tests and approves Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) software updates and deploys Terminal Server applications using SMS and/or SCCM.
  • Manages Terminal Server user profiles and provides end-user support by phone or on-site.
  • Responds to emergency calls in the evenings and on weekends.


Qualification Requirements:
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Windows 2003 – OR
  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional (Enterprise Administrator or Server Administrator)

Required Skills:
  • Expertise and significant hands-on experience in Microsoft Server Technology, Active Directory, SMS, SCCM, SCOM, databases, backup/replication, antivirus/spyware/intrusion detection, remote access solutions, terminal services, thin clients/laptops/pc’s and handhelds.
  • Minimum of 4 years experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting Windows Server technologies and Windows XP/7 in a multi-server Active Directory environment.
  • Experience configuring, monitoring and troubleshooting firewalls and VPNs.
  • Experience installing and maintaining wireless networks.
  • Experience with defining complex Active Directory Group Policies (GPO).
  • Experience working in and end-user support environment with more than 2,000 employees.
  • Demonstrated skills in configuring, building, and maintaining a Citrix and Windows Terminal Server environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Network Load Balancing/Clustering or similar load-balancing solution.
  • Experience in repacking software installation packages to meet DOE client/server standards.
  • Experience in programming in VBScript to develop complex scripting procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Systems Management Server and System Center Configuration Manager or similar software delivery solution.
  • Knowledge of network ports and associated applications.
  • Knowledge of SANs, Fiber/SCSI Connections & Switching, data storage and synchronization software options; NAS, storage arrays, etc.
  • Working knowledge of HP Insight Manager, HP Open View or Microsoft Operations Manager.
  • Basic programming experience writing PowerShell, C+, or command line scripts to automate repetitive task.
  • Knowledge of SQL syntax and experience writing database queries.
  • Experience creating, maintaining and restoring SQL databases.
  • Experience supporting large numbers of both managed and unmanaged workstations.
  • Willingness to learn proprietary applications used throughout the organization.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Good communication skills.
